Bill Gates & Brittney Spears

At home I've been reading The World is Flat (which I can't recommend enough). Anyway, he's writing about how America is losing it's competitive advantage in the world (this isn't the whole book, but an important piece) and he writes this... In China today, Bill Gates is Brittney Spears. In America, Brittney Spears is Brittney Spears and THAT is our problem." So Jennifer and I have been having conversations about how to help our kids fall in love with science and engineering. We don't have any solid answers yet.

Yo Charlie,

I tried to post about your "real man" entry, but it wouldn't let me!

Anyhoo, I don't think there is such thing as a 'real man' or 'real woman'. It's so subjective, based on our preconceived ideas stemming from our culture, family, friends, etc. Think about what a 'real man' or 'real woman' was supposed to be 100 years ago, or even 1000 years ago! Yikes. So here we are, trying to figure out who we are or who we are "supposed" to be. I agree with you...we just need to be ourselves and stop trying to live up to a social standard that changes all the time...otherwise, we will just be neurotic men and women! Ahhh! Isn't it fun to think about this stuff???

Likewise on not being able to post under "real man"....

DUDE!! You built your house with your own two hands!!! Doesn't get much more "manly" than that!

I have more insight on the subject, but maybe when I have more time...

Charlie - to answer your question on how to encourage you kids to get into math - - remember they are individuals - they are motivated individually - - making it competive worked for me - - timing how fast I could do so many math problems - - competeting against a clock - - but don't forget they are individual - - individuals, who God created some who have a natural nack for math and science some who dont - - don't forget the most driven people in the workd are that way because of there parent - - their parents pushed them when they were younger (maybe to hard), and they are still living it up

talk to you later
