A Dilemma...

A theoretical friend of mine is thinking about a potential job offer. He has been asked to talk to a few of the people that would be doing the hiring over "cocktails."

My friend is a Christian, concerned with his testimony, and therefore doesn't want to commit one of two errors:

1. He doesn't want to appear to be a lush (he's not).

at the same time...

2. He doesn't want to appear prudish and judgmental (he's not).

What do you think is the wise course of action?

Let's have ourselves a discussion...

he should start the conversation by saying, "i just want you to know i'm not a lush."

then he should drink himself into oblivion.

then the next morning he should call the interviewers and explain he didn't want to appear judgemental and as far as he remembers, he got the job!

I'd go with a vodka and tonic. The vodka is a manly drink, but the water says "I'm not a lush."

This is simple. Order a beer.

What the heck is a "theoretical friend?" I mean, is he a friend or not?

As far as the drinking...Good Lord! You Christians think too much about this stuff. If it's over cocktails, just order what you want. If you don't want a "drink" as in the alcoholic variety, then get something else. I hate alcohol, not from a moral standpoint, but I actally just don't enjoy drinking it from my own taste preference. So I wouldn't get it for that reason. I usually get water...unless they are buying.

For what it's worth, my wife got drunk at a church function. It was hilarious!

I don't think anyone will judge him for not getting a drink. There are plenty of people who don't drink and it has nothing to do with their faith. So unless he somehow implies or sends out the vibe that he is judging them for ordering drinks (which many Christians do! ugh), then he can just order a Pepsi. Or preferrably a Mt. Dew. But ordering a beer or two wouldn't hurt anything either, imho.
